Get REAL, Would ya!? Part I - A ZNG look at Real Grade series!

I may be a little late to on the boat but I wanna comment about the recently launched Real Grade (RG) series now that i've gotten my hands on one and another one is on the way. So far i've built about maybe half of the RG RX-78-2 Gundam and let me tell you....it's something different, it feels like a MG in 1/144 size! The frame is pre-assembled and that scared me a bit, a bit due to others impressions and just looking at them! Do be CAUTIOUS as you can break the things without working them out a bit first. What I mean by working it out is taking the frames out of the gates and bend them at the joints SLOWLY before building, loosen it up then build upon it, you will find posing much more easier afterwards.

Do NOT let this happen to you. :D Image from Dalong.net. Thanks for the tip!

RG introduces something that needs to come to MG and that is the multi-color armor pieces that give a radical degree of detail over just the same flat color over the entire armor. This is difficult to explain so take the following pic from Dalong.net into consideration.

Notice the white and duller white colors? Interesting huh? Image from Dalong.net

Another staple of the RG series is the decals.....which is tricky, see, the decals they provide are all stickers....which are supposed to be the mortal enemy right? I've seen builds that make stickers look good with RG kits, but Bandai does offer the waterslide decals separately, which I'm opting for to decal my builds because I'm going to paint both of my RX-78-2 and Char's Zaku II.

Stickers will always be stickers! Go Waterslides, will ya!? Image from Dalong.net

That wraps it up for Part 1 of looking at the RG series! Stay tuned for Part II with my own builds showcasing these two and perhaps a special appearance by the RG Strike Gundam! Special thanks to Dalong.net for images and all the hard work on reviewing everything Gunpla! Keep up the Gunpla, Dalong!

Chosen by VEDA #4: Great Gunplars - Tember Gundam

I've decided Chosen By VEDA articles are no longer a monthly thing, I'm just going to highlight awesome gunplars whenever the hell I feel like it now, it will lead to more content anyway, but enough about that! This time around we got Tember Gundam and his awesome PG 00 Gundam. It took me a long while to warm up to the design of 00, I thought it took what Exia was and kind of went backwards but I came around especially after seeing so many amazing schemes people applied to it and at the top is this PG, the first PG for Chosen by VEDA. I love the way he worked in different blues instead of relying on just the usual blue, then add in after market thrusters from Mecha Skunk, and abunch of decals that make it truly Ver. Tem! Few pictures below, but it to do it justice hit Tember Gundam's Blog and view all the pics!

HGUC Gouf Custom 1/144 #2 - GAF Grunt MS Build

Sometimes I take blog posts and apply them to my forum posts as add-ons to avoid doing multiple descriptions, today i'm doing the opposite, here's the latest entry (with added content to clear up confusion) from my efforts in this Group Build from the Gundam Australia Forums.

Some updates on the HG Gouf Custom front. I decided to do this a weathered OOB build and so far I got the shield down, I'm using new techniques in preparation for the RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0 restore project. I've took a Tamiya scriber II to this shield and gave it some damage much like it appears on the box art then I went further with weathering pigments and paint. I'm not done yet as I intend to go back and put some more cuts and sand down some of the 'fresher' spots. Below are so shots the shield, the Gouf Custom panel lined in prep for weathering, and my cluttered work area and some WIP shots from another build!

Oh there's a special guest here, and that would be fellow forum member Falldog who sent me a spare gun barrel for my MG Nemo for the same group build and who left his 'calling card' :P

Chosen by VEDA #3: Great Gunplars - Lupes

Now usually I like to hunt out completed kits for these articles, but this one simply can't wait for the completed process and that's Lupes' PG Strike Freedom WIP. I've seen alot of Strike Freedoms lately due to it being the latest PG kit and alot of custom color schemes but none really grabbed me such as this. It seems I have a thing for blues since my first "Chosen by VEDA" was Gai-Gun's Mica Blue Gouf Ver. 2.0. Words can't describe how awesome these metallic blues work well with each other and it's even been called the "ANA Strike Freedom" due to the metallic blues and light blues being used, and to top it all off....he used a custom LED in the head, one thing I really like as you all know! Enough talk, take a gander at some awesome pics below!

Lupes runs his own blog called It's A Gundaaaam! which can be found here, go and take a look at the Blue Beserker Sinanju while you are at it!

Gunpla WIPs
:
MG 1/100 Red Frame Kai - Chest and Head unit down, this kit looks amazing already. I love it and I will be painting the frame at very least!
RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam - My first RG! I've only assembled one legand the feet so far but I really love the engineering put into this new RG line. Can't wait for the RG Strike!
HG 1/144 Gouf Custom - My first newer HGUC kit, I love how far HG kits have come. Straight Build done, just deciding if I wanted to paint or just weathered it like 08th MS Team's version and matte coat it.
MG 1/100 MSA-003 Nemo - Part of the GAF Grunt MS Build. I've started the painting process with Tamiya Mica Silver, Deep Metallic Blue, and Light Gunmetal. What it needs next? A new can of Tamiya Mica Silver ( I ran out with a few parts to spare :/ ), Tamiya Gold, and Mica Red....this is getting crazy :D
MG 1/100 RX-78-2 Ver. 2.0 - Weathering 2.0 job in progress. Restore Project III launched!
MG 1/100 AMX-004 Qubeley - Arms done. Silver detailing. White parts painted with a Pearl White metallic finish.
MG Perfect Gundam - I don't like this kit as is...Originally I as going to give the parts to the Nemo, but I scrapped that idea in favor for another, I gotta figure out what to do what this otherwise boring kit.
MG 1/100 God Gundam -  Ver. Ka detailing done, LED system for Burning Finger in progress.
MG 1/100 XXXG-01D Deathscythe EW -  Straight build complete, painting up next!
MG 1/100 ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Full Burst Mode -The Restoration Project is Ongoing. 80% done. Only decals and replacement parts left.
MG 1/100 RX-178 AEUG Gundam MK. II 2.0 HD version - Straight Build done, replacement parts in and this baby is ready for those HD silver waterslides!
MG 1/100 RX-0 Gundam Unicorn OVA Ver. - Straight build done, Panel Lined. Tamiya gunmetal added to weapons, Tamiya clear red added to clear pink parts of Destroy Mode. Decals to be done, and topcoat. Thinking about painting this in egg shell white to really match the OVA colors.
MG 1/100 XXXG-OIW Wing Gundam - Straight build done. Panel lined. Decals to be done. Face mask disappeared, had to order a new one and guess what? It came and I forgot to order the red chin part....due to the Earthquake/Tsunami the replacement part service has been suspended, but that's nothing to complain about. Godspeed Japan. After all of this is taken care of, I will be painting this kit. I love the gold looks i've been seeing.
MG 1/100 RX-93 Nu Gundam - Straight build done. Panel lined. Decals and weathering ongoing. Purchased a Scriber II, currently trying not to destroy this kit using it....bought some putty for that reason as well.
MG 1/100 MS-14S Char's Gegloog Ver. 2.0 - Straight build done, panel lined, decals 70% done, weathering 10%
MG 1/100 RX-78[G] Gundam - Straight build done. Panel lined. Weathering marker cancelled by provider. This will stand as is until I find some other way get that sand weathering finish. I have a Fine Modeller magazine that has a technique using pastels that I might put to use on this!
MG 1/100 MS-06R-2 Zaku II ver. 2.0 Johnny Ridden's Customize - Straight build done. Panel lined. Decals done, weathering in progress.
MG 1/100 GN-001 Exia Ignition Mode - Paint and Order Waterslide Decals some point in time, and with my new knowledge of fiber optics thanks to Ghost of Zeon, I think this kit might light up more in the future!

RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0 Restore Project III Launched

Seems my theme lately has been to go back and restore some of the models I built first in my first Gunpla year. Some of you saw this kit already released as "weathered" Gundam ...but naaaah, I can do better than that now and i'm going to tackle this guy much like I tackled the Turn A Gundam that was recently completed. Don't worry, I know some of you love the shield and that's not going to change much, however the suit itself needs some work and I will get it looking better.  I already started cleaning up the right leg and got rid of the stupid 'sharpee-like' silver markers I used and some applications of the Tamiya Weather Master that weren't very good. I don't have to be perfect in the 'clean  up' process because it's going to be dirty eventually anyway, i'm cleaning some of this up and leaving shades of the clean up to make a foundation to start on. Well that's that for now, off to work then I'll probably work on this later. Keep up the Gunpla, Newtypes!

GAF: The Grunt MS Group Build MG Nemo WIP #3

Been awhile since I blog updated about the Grunt MS Build. It's been going fantastic, some have finished their builds, such as Shifty's excellent MG RB-79 Ver. Ka. and check out the WIP mods Hemish is going at on his GM Command, the dazzle work on Tristan's Gogg, and Zenma5ter's Shadow Zaku II Trio! Be sure to check the main page to follow the other works our excellent Gunplars are doing as well.

So what am I up to? Progress has been slow on my MG Nemo, some due to taking it easy to not screw anything up and others due to the bout of illness I just had, I did get some painting done today but I also ran out of some paints today. So far I'm going to need another can of Tamiya Mica Silver since I wasn't able to get all of the green armor pieces painted, I sure hope the Tamiya Deep Metallic Blue lasts for the navy parts. Below are some preview shots of the upper half, please note the red and yellow parts are not painted yet they were assembled for the preview shot only. These will later be painted gold and mica red. Keep up the Gunpla, Newtypes!

Turn A Gundam Completed - Weathered White Doll Gallery

Another completed model! On a roll!  Here is the final product of the MG 1/100 Turn A Gundam, weathered like when the White Doll rose from the mountains before Loran Cehack and Sochie Heim! A few months back I blogged about using the Tamiya Weathering Master kit on my RX-78-2 kit, this was also applied here and with better results since my skills have improved since then. All this was top off with a matte topcoat to seal that gritty detail. Went a little photo crazy here, big gallery below. Keep up the Gunpla, Newtypes!

Guncannon Restored! Completed Model Gallery

Finally, I finish a model....other than replace an LED light, you can call this baby DONE! I always consider my works WIPs even after builds because I always have that desire to go back after i've learned a few things and make it better, the Guncannon was no exception. The Guncannon was something I built and played with for a bit then set aside until other plans hit me, and they did. I put LED lights in this thing, I cleaned it up a bit though some nub marks made it through the painting process, doesn't bother me because this is my first fully painted and customized kit. The paints I applied were a mix of two brands, Testors and Tamiya. Tamiya is the favorable brand but Testors did not let me down. TS-45 Pearl White and TS-56 Brilliant Orange was used, along with Testors Revving Red and Blazing Black. Every part of this kit was painted in it's original color scheme, I liked it too much to change it! Ontop of all that was a nice shiny coat of Ultra Clear-coat, also Testors brand then I placed decals and panel lined, then added at least two more coats. The pictures below showcase all of the work I put into this (hopefully) and I know some of you will have issues with the wires from the LEDs in the photos but it really doesn't bother me that much, they can be concealed behind the Guncannon fairly well when posed at my desk here and that's all that really matters and I really didn't feel like feeding wires through the entire frame to help conceal them. Well enough with the chatter, onto the Gallery! C&Cs are welcome! Keep up the Gunpla, Newtypes!
